Description

The name VIDOCQ CONSULTING honours Eugène-François Vidocq (1775 – 1857), a fascinating figure in French history—once a criminal, later head of Paris’s Sûreté Brigade, and a pioneer of modern policing.

Widely regarded as a forerunner of criminology, Vidocq revolutionised criminal investigation by introducing record cards for suspects, using undercover infiltration of criminal circles, taking the first steps toward forensic science (trace evidence, fingerprints, and more), and inventing what was then considered tamper-proof paper.

In 1833, after leaving the police, he founded the “Bureau des Renseignements,” still regarded today as history’s first private-detective agency. Today, around 20,000 licensed private investigators operate worldwide.
